100 Things I Love

In her book This Is About You: Amazing, Weird, Beautiful You, one of the first exercises Mary England presents is naming 100 things you love. That may sound simple on the surface, but it was actually quite the challenge. What makes me the happiest? What do I like so much that it edges over into love?

magpie #216

I am frightened by the oceans in my heart,
the tides pushing my blood
in frantic red channels

and the crisp moon
defying its orbit in my belly -
dripping pretty paragraphs.

A parade of souls traipses through,
stirring up the ash & soot
collecting in the folds
of my paper lungs.

Puddles of glass
intermingle with
black earth.

Mutely, I gasp,
tasting the cold air,
and cross my fingers you'll stay
in spite of the chill.

magpie #214

for Magpie Tales.

Glass strung on black wires.
Reaching with the soft skin of a child,
fingers splayed in the yellow light.

Struck by a sudden
penetrative pain.

Reeling, I take another bite.
I dare to let my hair down.
I curl into your palms.

And slowly
I revert to my old ways;
stop the bleeding.

100 Facts About Me

1. I love making lists. I thrive on making lists. To-do lists for today, goals for the future, lists of music, etc.
2. I love being organized in general.
3. I have taken several variations of the Myers-Briggs typology test, and I have consistently been an INFJ. My percentage scores have also consistently been highest for introversion, second highest for judging, third for feeling, and last for intuition.
4. Years ago, I sorted myself into Hufflepuff. A year or so ago, I identified more strongly with Ravenclaw. Then I realized just how much of a Slytherin I really am. Most accurately, I would call myself a Slytherclaw, but if someone asks me to choose a House, it would be Slytherin.
5. I may be a little on the scatterbrained side. I got distracted from continuing this list when I read a post about Elizabeth Bathory and watched a related video.
6. I love having painted nails, but I often get distracted from painting them. (See #5.)
7. When I fall in love with a new song, I often listen to it on repeat for days at a time.
8. I listen to music by song, not by album. I have to love an artist a lot to consider buying an entire album of theirs.
9. Doctor Who has been my favorite show for a long time, but that's a) because I wasn't exposed to that many shows and b) it used to be higher quality. I don't dislike Moffat, but he has changed the dynamic of Doctor Who considerably. Not to mention, I've been introduced to many new shows in college.
10. Community is in the running for being one of my favorite shows ever. It's that good.
11. Other shows I enjoy include Invader Zim, Drake and Josh, Pokemon, Avatar: The Legend of Korra, Spongebob Squarepants, and several others.
12. My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic is also a wonderful show. Fluttershy is my spirit pony. I can also relate a fair bit to Twilight Sparkle.
13. I obsessively catalog characters I can relate to in television shows and other media. Currently my list includes Neville Longbottom (Harry Potter), Rory Williams (Doctor Who), Charlie (Perks of Being a Wallflower), Tracy (Pokemon), Craig Owens (Doctor Who), Simon Tam (Firefly), River Tam (Firefly), Sam Winchester (Supernatural), and the aforementioned ponies.
14. I have social anxiety. This means that things that other people consider normal, such as calling an acquaintance on the phone or asking for a to-go box at a restaurant, stress me out inordinately. I am extremely self-conscious and self-aware when I am in public because I feel like everyone is watching me and dissecting my actions.
15. I have Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD). This includes excessive anxious/worried thoughts, tension, inability to concentrate, difficulty falling asleep and/or staying asleep, yearning for certainty, restlessness, feeling overwhelmed, and occasionally anxiety attacks (shortness of breath, quickened pulse, nausea, lightheadedness, and/or not feeling safe/secure).
16. I have a manifestation of OCD called dermatillomania, which means compulsive skin-picking. It's gross and destructive, so I've been trying to get it under control, but that is easier said than done. I generally pick on my fingers (thumbs especially), face/neck, and back.
17. I am virtually unable to throw away pens, even when they stop working completely; I have to ask someone else to do it for me.
18. In second grade, I had to get glasses. Since then, my eyesight has gotten steadily worse. I started wearing contacts my senior year of high school, so many people don't know I have poor vision when they first meet me.
19. I had braces from fifth grade to seventh grade. Afterward, I had to wear retainers all day every day, then only at night, and now I am at only three nights a week.
20. Rainy weather is the best weather. Especially for napping.
21. Hot tea helps me function.
22. I may have a slight addiction to caffeine. If I don't have something caffeinated during the day, I tend to get tired earlier or get caffeine headaches.
23. Green is my absolute favorite color.
24. My mind is constantly active - I get songs stuck in my head all the time, I rehearse conversations in my head, I'm extremely prone to daydreaming, if I'm inspired to write I will repeat lines of poetry in my head until I can write them down, etc.
25. I love reading poetry. Sylvia Plath, E.E. Cummings, Sandra Cisneros, Edwin Arlington Robinson, and Maurice Manning are a few of my favorites.
26. I write a lot of poetry. I also attempt novel-length fiction and I've dabbled in short story/flash fiction writing, but most of what I write is poetry.
27. I tried to write a poem every day this year, but somewhere in the middle of February I failed. I didn't let that discourage me and I have still written a decent number so far.
28. I have had my writing published several places, both online and in print.
29. One of those places, Every Day Poets, recently accepted me as one of their slush readers. It's an unpaid position, but I still couldn't be happier. I am only 22, but they deemed me qualified enough to help them with their publication, and it's doing something I really enjoy.
30. As far as long-term career goals, I don't have anything specific in mind. I have a variety of interests, so most any of them would suit me. (I know adults, including my parents, hate to hear this, but I feel like it's good that I'm flexible but at the same time, all of the things I could pursue fall into the same general field of interest.)
31. These things include: middle school English teacher; slush reader for a literary magazine; copy editor for a  magazine, newspaper, or publishing house; contributor to a publication (especially if the articles deal with literature, music, or art); etc. I know it's unrealistic to think I could earn a living from my poetry or prose, but it's also tacked on the list.
32. People always ask if you're a cat person or dog person; why can't you be both?
33. In terms of personality, though, I can relate more to a cat. Half the time super needy and affectionate, half the time distant. Easily startled. Loves sleeping.
34. Politically, I would say I am moderate leaning toward liberal.
35. I would also label myself as a feminist. No, I am not a man-hater. No, I am not about female-supremacy. The original intent of feminism is striving for equality, which I can stand behind. Not to mention the patriarchy, sexism, etc. are annoying. :)
36. I try not to use any chatspeak or acronyms in my communication. The only ones I will use are "lol" and "idk". Occasionally others, but that's only to be ironic.
37. Have I mentioned I may be a bit of a hipster?
38. I own a lot of plaid. One of my favorite scarves is plaid. As is one of my favorite pairs of skinny jeans.
39. I own a lot of music you probably haven't heard of.
40. But, at the same time, I have a lot of pop music.
41. Every person I have met has found some way to mock me for my music taste. I have country music, stuff by Miley Cyrus, hardcore religious music, and extremely indie stuff. Take your pick.
42. Ever since starting this list, I have been distracted by a variety of things, including: Tumblr, Facebook, texting a friend, and making tea. There are surely plenty more distractions to come.
43. Right now I have "Off To The Races" by Lana Del Rey stuck in my head.
44. Her song "Young and Beautiful" is the song I currently have on repeat though. (See #7.)
45. I will be graduating from college in one semester with degrees in journalism, English, and public relations.
46. I am open to applying to basically any job when I first graduate, but I refuse to work in food service. Not because I find it demeaning in any way, but because cleaning up messes made by food or food trash is absolutely disgusting.
47. I enjoy pondering over connections between things in my head. (For example: I dated Josiah -> Josiah wanted me to spend time with him and his friends -> Many of his friends became my friends -> Drake told me Josh added a PR major and he only need a handful of extra classes -> I proposed this idea to my parents and they liked it -> I talked to my adviser and she added PR as another major -> The first class I enrolled in for PR was "Principles of Business Management" -> I met Jared in that class -> We began dating) I think it's fascinating.
48. I just got distracted (again) by my family returning from my brother's baccalaureate. He will be graduating from high school on May 24.
49. This coming up with 100 things about me has proved harder than I'd initially imagined, but I'll keep going.
50. I am prone to getting highly excited about something (such as signing up to take classes through Coursera) but then wimping out at the last moment because I feel overwhelmed. (See #15.)
51. I listen to my music rather quietly compared to the average person.
52. This summer, I have discovered so much awesome music so far, I'm tempted to make playlists/mixed CDs for every month.
53. I have collected my best friends from all over. (Karen is from the public school I attended for ninth grade and part of tenth, Emily is from my homeschool group days in tenth grade, Jackie is from Gamer's Nights which were related to my homeschool group, Billy is from the private high school I attended for eleventh and twelfth grade, then there are several people I know through Jackie and several people I've met in college.)
54. I am awful at communication sometimes. When I'm at school, it's so easy because I see my friends on campus every day, but I find it difficult to keep in contact with my friends back home. And the same is true as soon as I get home for the summer.
55. This blog gets its title (and subsequently its URL) from a poem I wrote called "wringing out wishes". It's one of my personal favorites, and at one point I had it memorized.
56. I have a very good memory, which makes acting in plays easier, but I haven't tried to memorize much of my own work.
57. I have acted in a few plays during my college years. My freshman year, I was Lady Nasty in "King Arthur's Calamity". My sophomore year, I was one of the White Witch's demon followers in "The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe". My senior year, I was Florence in "The Curious Savage". Each experience was uniquely enjoyable and satisfying.
58. Spoken word poetry is excellent. Sometimes I spend afternoons clicking through Youtube videos and soaking in the beautiful words and raw enthusiasm of their authors.
59. Reciting poetry is general is lovely.
60. There's just something about a beautiful word that makes it taste better in my mouth. I love wordplay, I love piecing words together and creating clean, crisp rhythms. It's thrilling.
61. I truly have the brain of a poet. I wax nostalgic about nearly everything. I enjoy reflecting on experiences and their implications almost more than I enjoyed the experiences themselves.
62. I am constantly studying myself and trying to figure myself out. It might be a symptom of going to college and newfound independence and that contagious self-discovery that tends to occur, but ah well.
63. I enjoy taking personality quizzes because it aids in my self-study.
64. I try not to use labels as a crutch. Rather, it makes me feel more secure. For example, I would feel like a freak if my excessive worrying didn't stem from something. But knowing that it is a symptom of anxiety, that it's something other people struggle with as well, makes me feel less dysfunctional and more in control of it.
65. My room is full of books I've acquired from used book stores, book fairs, antique malls, thrift stores, and other places. I seem to buy more books than I read, but I'm hoping to read a fair bit this summer.
66. My to-read list for the summer has 17 books on it. I've already read one, and I'm halfway through another.
67. In terms of fiction, I love murder mysteries and suspense. I also love books with skillful character development. Fantasy isn't really my thing; it takes a lot for me to truly get into fantasy books.
68. I must admit, I also have a shelf full of Steeple Hill books (Christian romance novels). It's a guilty pleasure.
69. Nearly every morning, I wake up before someone can wake me up or before my alarm goes off. If someone truly needed to wake me up for something urgent, I have no idea what they would do.
70. It always surprises me when people compliment me. I'm awful at knowing how to accept/respond to compliments.
71. I started dating in the year 2005. Since then, I have dated twelve people.
72. However, I have kissed eighteen people. There were some people I dated and never kissed, and there were some people I kissed and never dated.
73. I have had blogs on several different websites, including Xanga, Livejournal, Wordpress, Tumblr, and here.
74. I absolutely love dresses. The last I counted, I own over thirty dresses. I'm too lazy to count again at the moment, but it's at least thirty, possibly forty by now.
75. I used to obsessively spell words the "British way" and my high school teachers probably thought I was pretentious and silly for it.
76. I've wavered between not wanting kids and wanting kids for a while now, but I think I've settled on wanting kids.
77. Because, really, I've saved up a lot of my childhood toys that they could play with, including all of my dinosaurs, plenty of pretend food, Barbie stuff, and much more. And I would love reading to my children and teaching them about all sorts of things.
78. I am ever-so-slightly a creeper. When I start a friendship with someone, I scour their Facebook profile, their blog, their internet presence in general to learn more about them. I am so genuinely interested in and fascinated by people, I cannot resist.
79. Sometimes I will Google myself just to see all the results, the places my writing has been published. I know this may sound a little vain, but it is tremendously encouraging and gives me the confidence boost I need on low days.
80. Recently I read online that journaling helps sooth anxiety, so I started using 750 Words again. It has helped out a little.
81. I just remembered how much I love inserting links into things because I feel like it reinforces them. I am now going to insert links into all the other facts where links are applicable. Before this point, there were no links, but now there are. You're welcome.
82. If I were to ever get a tattoo, it would be a headcrab from the Half-Life games, and it would be behind my right ear.
83. If I can handle this, well... I have ideas for several other tattoos, including the original artwork for Princess Lolly from Candyland, a creeper from Minecraft, a couple League of Legends champions, possibly even TF2 characters or a Weeping Angel. The possibilities are endless.
84. League of Legends is a pretty rad game. The role I typically play is support. Some of my favorite champs to play are Lulu, Soraka, Sona, and Lux.
85. Sometimes I use the word "rad" too much in writing or conversation. Oh well.
86. Nearly every time I sleep, whether it's just a nap or sleeping at night, I have very vivid dreams. It's rare that I wake up and don't remember dreaming at least a little.
87. Bad grammar annoys me, but I will not unfriend people on Facebook for it.
88. I will, however, unfriend people on Facebook for being annoying about their political stance or for not talking to me in years yet keeping me in their "collection" of friends just because.
89. I have never broken a bone in my life.
90. Nor have I ever gotten stung by any sort of stinging insect (besides mosquitoes, of course).
91. I don't know how to swim.
92. I only started learning how to drive last summer. I have my permit and plan on testing for my license sometime this summer. It is a terrifying thought, but I need to finally take that step.
93. I am currently signed up for five Coursera classes, which may change knowing me. (See #50.) However, if I stick with it, the next class starts in twelve days.
94. This past school year, I was the copy editor for my university's newspaper. I tried my hardest to scour the articles and would get upset if someone pointed out the smallest mistake to me when the paper came out.
95. In case it wasn't obvious, I'm a bit of a perfectionist.
96. At my university, I have been commonly known as "the girl who can eat everything and not gain a pound". While I do have an ongoing love affair with food, this isn't entirely accurate. During the last two months of school this past spring semester, I gained six pounds from going to McDonald's nearly every day. It's hard to resist McFlurries and free wi-fi.
97. The reason I was going to McDonald's so often was to hang out with Jared after he got off work. Nowhere on campus is a viable option after 11pm, which is right when his shift ended. We spent several nights watching movies or comedians, playing League of Legends, studying for Business Management, doing other homework, and (of course) snacking.
98. Jared recently got me into a tabletop RPG called Pathfinder. It's pretty fun and makes me feel like I've ascended to a whole new level of nerdom.
99. I like wearing perfume. I have several different fragrances, including Japanese cherry blossom (Jared's favorite), pomegranate, and a citrusy blend from Bath and Body Works called Breathe Delight.
100. It was around 7:30pm when I started this list. It is now 10:30pm. I intend to eat a bowl of Goldfish crackers, listen to Lana Del Rey over and over, chat with my dude, maybe play some League of Legends, and then head to bed. It's been real.

The haphazard adventures of publishing.

So, one day I was sitting in class, daydreaming about the guy sitting across from me. The problem? I had a boyfriend and he had a girlfriend. Don't get me wrong, I wasn't seriously considering pursuing him; I just thought he was cute & intelligent. So what did I do with those temporary feelings? Write them into a poem and forget about them.

A couple years later, I'm shooting emails left and write to poetry publishers with my submissions. This month, a publisher replied saying that they were interested in my 10-line (literally), daydream-fest of a poem. A poem I thought was a throwaway. And the kicker? I'd already sent them several other poems which were more recent and which I thought were my best.

What sense does that make, right?

No idea, but really. I'm trying not to question it. Sure, it's not one of my STELLAR poems that I would LOVE for people to read and analyze, but it's a poem that's mine, getting published. That alone is awesome, and that's why I keep sending out a variety, because I can never fully guess what a publisher will or won't decide they'd like included in their publication.

Remembering 9/11

As everyone else, I have a story.
My story is uninspiring, trivial, and slightly embarrassing.
I rarely ever tell my story.

I was in 5th grade. I was still at home, getting ready for school.
When my mother found me to tell me, I was sitting on the toilet, after brushing my teeth and before packing up my stuff to wait for the bus. I remember being very confused, and thinking she was over-dramatizing something small as she beckoned me to "come see what these people are doing to the U.S." before I walked into our main room and saw the TV.
I remember staring at the fire, the smoke and the wreckage, barely understanding the news reporter and the spectators and whoever else.
I remember feeling very small, very powerless, in awe and in shock.
I don't remember if we talked about it at school. We may have tuned in briefly to listen to reports on the radio. We may have discussed things briefly in my gifted class. The main feelings clinging to my mind from that day are confusion, disbelief, sadness. But I don't believe I ever cried.
To this day, it doesn't make me angry, but it doesn't make me feel extremely patriotic. It just breaks my heart.
